It took us three years to think, seven days to decide and discuss, and just five hours to reach, and we were at the ultimate destination….GOA!!!!
Six of us, without much planning just left the hostels with one luggage each, boarded the train at the dead of the night, and by the time the sunrays fell on us, we were standing on the station deciding what to do and where to go next. We enquired about some hotels but that time of the year being the peak season for tourism, left us with not many options but to rely on the driver of the taxi to take us to some place to stay. We wandered around, facing disappointment at al the places we went, but as they say, effort never goes wasted.
One of the lodges we went to pointed us to another where there were some rooms available. The location was good, the place being just two minutes distance from the Baga beach. We were thrilled to have got such a great location.
However when we reached there, the owner told us that the rooms would be empty by noon and asked us to come at that time. It was just about nine in the morning. We decided that the best thing to do till then was to go and visit the beach, but then!! We had our luggage, which was not so portable as to be carried around the beach. What do we do with it?? The owner then asked us to leave our luggage there, he will keep it safe, we discussed and then in the view that we did not have any other option we left everything save a few essentials there, and left. Just two minutes walk on the sandy beach and we could feel the waves touch our feet. The beach was peaceful and quiet as expected in the morning. We had our fill of enjoyment for a long time before realizing that we should have been at the hotel an hour ago.
So, it was decided that we immediately get back. We started, took the turn from where we thought we had come, went some paces before deciding that this place was new and we had taken the turn at the wrong place. We retraced our way back and got into the next turning only to see the place once again was alien to us. We continued this approach till we were tired. Already tired from the journey, and the lava hot rays of the sun burning us made us decide to have lunch before we did something else. At that point I realized that we had been fools. We didn’t have the phone number of the hotel, we didn’t know how to get back, and our luggage was there. My mind began to imagine all sorts of things. What if they had cheated us, what if we would not get our luggage back. We only had their word against ours. What do we do?
It was then that I mentioned to my friend that we should have taken the phone number to which he suddenly realized that he had the phone number of the hotel that had forwarded us to this particular hotel. We called, it didn’t prove futile. The aunty there laughed at our stupidity, and then assured that someone would be soon there to take us back.
It was not more than ten minutes that someone came looking for us and led the way back to the hotel. We got our luggage and our rooms. All the tension that had for so long clouded my mind cleared. I sat down and smiled, tension or not, stupidity or not, it was another part of our adventure, something to remember the trip by. It made the trip unforgettable, and after so many days after our return I still smile, when I remember the incident!!
